The
18th century figure Marie Antoinette is the subject of the 2006
biopic directed by Sofia Coppola. Coppola approaches her story with empathy, portraying
her life amid the opulent yet claustrophobic world of Versailles. This Autumn,
she returns to the big screen with the story of another famous woman, albeit
contemporary, Priscilla Presley, based on the memoir, Elvis and me. The
film spans the course of her relationship with Elvis, from their first encounter to
the end of their marriage, touching on themes of female identity and adolescence.
The themes Coppola revisits with this new film certainly hold a universal
appeal.
